ABSTRACT

An incumbent of a particular status and its accompanying roles may be in that status only temporarily or for a lifetime. If a person remains in an occupational status or a particular set of occupational statuses we say that he makes a career in that occupation. Is lorry driving a career or are lorry drivers people who have taken up the occupation temporarily as a fill-in of some kind? If lorry driving is a career, in what sense is it so? The answer to this latter question depends very much on the definition of career which is adopted. 1
