ABSTRACT

The structure of the road haulage industry and its evolution present an environment in which regulations are difficult to enforce. Managements of road haulage firms seem to know how the lorry driver sees his role and in most instances are prepared to meet his expectations. Management views the lorry driver as a worker who likes the discretion involved in his job. The job presents, in an objective sense, a good deal of discretion to him. This chapter attempts to discover what the subjective side of the picture is, in other words, to discover whether the lorry driver in fact has the expectations that managements perceive that he has.
