ABSTRACT

We have already defined the scope of comparative urban study, and it is now appropriate to submit one such study to the reader. For this purpose we shall summarize the monograph of the American geographer, Professor J. B. Leighly, on the towns of Mälardalen in central Sweden, a fascinating pioneer study among English-speaking geographers. This study will draw attention to the great amount of first-class pioneer work in urban geography that has been carried out by the Swedish geographers since the days of Sten de Geer. It also serves to illustrate the form-elements of the urban habitat and the relations they bear to each other and to the site in the formation of the whole habitat, and the changes that the habitat has experienced in the historic phases of its development.
