ABSTRACT
The first chapters have been concerned with the character and processes of urban growth and areal differentiation within the urban habitat. Groups of small towns in Sweden, Switzerland and France have been studied as illustrations of how urban communities develop. The brief study of Basel has served to show the distinctive processes which characterize the growth of a larger city. The analysis of Basel is also designed to demonstrate the geographic methods employed in the study of the urban habitat.
