ABSTRACT

THE first two chapters have described local authority housing policy and outlined the setting for this research. The remaining chapters describe and discuss some of the main findings. These may be grouped under two main headings: community and neighbourhood relationships. Chapters Three to Seven deal with relationships and social groups which embraced the entire village; the extent of such relationships is examined in terms of the classical sociological concept of community. Each chapter takes one important element in the concept of community, to see how far significant new relationships had developed in that respect, and how far these could be considered effects of rehousing. Chapters Eight to Twelve take a narrower focus, and examine relationships among neighbours from several points of view. There is no concept exactly analogous to community which could be used for this purpose; appropriate terms are therefore used and developed as the need for them arises.
