ABSTRACT
FOLLOWING the example of Clemmer, 1 an attempt was made to survey the characteristics, sociological and criminal, of the population of Pentonville. This was no easy task owing to the size of the institution and its population turnover. Accordingly, it was decided to take a census of population on a particular day, after the research had become well established.
