ABSTRACT

THE maximum security prison, for all the long hours its inmates may pass in sleep and boredom behind their cell doors, for all the shortness of their working day, is nevertheless a community of restless activity. At Pentonville the fundamental concern of the staff in ensuring that 1,200 men are contained, clothed, fed, worked, exercised and entertained, are treated when sick, are received and discharged, is such as to occupy almost all of their time. This chapter will be concerned with an analysis of the daily routine of the prison, with the activities of the staff, and with many of the shortcomings of their performance.
