ABSTRACT

In an experiment by Symonds, 1 in America, on 'Sex Differences in the Life Problems and Interests of Adolescents', 784 High School boys and 857 girls ranked fifteen 'major areas of life concern' according to their interest in reading or discussion of them. The largest sex difference was in the place given to personal attractiveness, which; was placed, on an average, fifth by the girls and eight by the boys. No figures seem to be available for rating of personal attractiveness in relation to the girls' own personal charm, as judged by the group; the writer's hypothesis would be an inverse ratio—the less a girl's personal attractiveness the greater her preoccupation with it.
