New Ventures in the Second Half of the Century

IN tracing the history of adult education in the second half of the century, it is possible to distinguish three more or less separate phases. There was first of all a somewhat confused gathering together of the innumerable strands which remained from the earlier period; this was followed by a series of new experiments which pointed forward; and there was finally the new impetus given to the movement after 1873 by the entry of the universities into the field.
