ABSTRACT

Is ‘culture générale’ to be conceived in traditional terms or has the concept room for science and technology? Is it based on early specialization of studies, or on delayed specialization? L’ Esprit of June 1954 quoted different opinions, 1 ‘The word culture today can have only one meaning: to be truly competent in the formally limited branch of one’s choice.’ The ability to learn and to adapt oneself late ought to be the primary object of schooling, or rather of education.’ ‘Classical culture is all the more necessary as technical science becomes more developed. In particular, the future social elites must be nurtured in this culture.’
