ABSTRACT
lunacy reform began on a national scale with the foundation of the county asylums, following the Act of 1808; but no reform takes place in a vacuum, and it is necessary to refer briefly to the movements in thought and philanthropic practice which bridge the gap between the small local reforms of the late eighteenth century, and the parliamentary reform movement of the early nineteenth.
