ABSTRACT
WE have, in the preceding chapters, described the hospitals and those who live and work in them; we have also outlined the services available for the treatment and training of patients. In this chapter we shall concentrate our attention on the experience of hospitalization; we shall start by a discussion of the ways in which patients are admitted, and then give an account of the freedoms they experience and the constraints to which they are subject in the course of their daily lives.
