ABSTRACT

THE aim of this chapter is to supplement the preceding account of a national sample of hospitals with a more detailed discussion of two particular hospitals which were studied intensively. 2 We have concentrated particularly upon the formal objectives of the institutions and the extent to which these are being met; this will inevitably involve discussion of the physical and relational difficulties existing within the hospitals and will, we believe, both emphasize and highlight many of the problems to which attention has already been drawn in the preceding chapters.
