ABSTRACT
MANY of the recent studies of populations of subnormality hospitals have concentrated primarily on age and grade of defect, and the emphasis has been on establishing the extent to which training and education are important in bringing about improvements in patients’ mental and physical capabilities. 1 In this chapter we shall attempt to give a picture of the social background and degree of physical handicap among the 3,038 patients in our sample.
