ABSTRACT
Egyptian political leader and first president of the Egyptian Republic. Nasser (1918-1970) helped to organize a clandestine army officers' organization and coup that toppled the Egyptian monarchy in July 1952. H e became prime minister in 1954 and then president (1956-1970).
