Qaddafi (1942- ) is a devout Muslim who has served both formally and informally as head of the North African state of Libya since 1969, when heled a bloodless coup against the Libyan monarchy. Qaddafi's parents were members of a nomadic Bedouin tribe, the Gadadfa, from which he derived his last name.
