ABSTRACT
The next task is to examine the nature of those external events which precipitate depressions. They may be divided into four groups. In a series of fifty-three cases observed twenty years ago no cause was noted in twenty cases; deprivations of one kind or another in thirteen, unconscious wish-fulfilments in fifteen, while five were not classified.
