ABSTRACT

The transforming symbols arise out of conflict. Most people who take account of life—as distinct from merely being carried by it—recognize that they are all the time torn between incompatible courses. Situations come up, calling for decision; but we cannot decide; or if we do decide, cannot hold. We feel we ought to do one thing, yet something in us wants to do another. We make good resolutions, and break them as soon as made. One day we are co-operative, altruistic, helpful, the next day petty and mean; one day, firm and self-reliant, the next weakly going with the crowd. We set out to take a strong line, and, not knowing how it happened, find ourselves going in the opposite direction to what we intended. Life is lived in a maze of opposites; a maze to which, often, there seems no clue.
