ABSTRACT

The C hart on p. 301 indicates the au th o r's hearing, as m easured a t the Bell Telephone L aboratory , New York, for notes of p itch varying betw een 64 v ibrations per second (low C below the bass clef) and 8192 vibrations per second an octave above th e top C on th e piano. The C hart shows norm al hearing up to 2048, followed by a com paratively deaf spot a t 4096, and a re tu rn to about norm al a t 8192. F o rtu nately (for the author) the speech resonances a t about 4096 are relatively un im portan t-the vowel resonances are nearly all below th a t frequency while the high frequencies of S and Z are m ostly above 5000.
