ABSTRACT

Dyslalia has been defined as a speech defect of organic or of functional origin, dependent upon malformation or imperfect innervation of the tongue, soft palate or other organs of articulation. The speech is impaired due to the condition of the external speech organs. It may range from a mild lisp to rapid, cluttered speech; it may be associated with deafness, or with physiologic or organic conditions which are unfavourable to normal speech development; the beginning of learning to talk may have been so delayed that speech retardation and persistence of infantile speech habits continue far beyond the early infancy period; children may invent a language of their own, manifesting what is called “idioglossia”. There is another form of dyslalia which is called rhinolalia-aperta or uranoschismatica, as in cleft-palate speech. 1 Uranoschismatica, or cleft-palate speech, is characterized by thick, breathy or nasal utterance in which all speech sounds except the nasals have become modified, and in which plosives and vowels become nasal sounds. The longer term is the more accurate as a description, but the popular term is cleft-palate speech. Short-palate speech shows similar characteristics, the speech sometimes being affected by the velar insufficiency. 1 Cleft of soft palate above https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315009414/7d1a5bde-0d98-42fa-acf8-26442ec5da46/content/fig4_1_C.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> Cleft of hard and soft palate https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315009414/7d1a5bde-0d98-42fa-acf8-26442ec5da46/content/fig4_2_C.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> Simple harelip and complete cleft https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315009414/7d1a5bde-0d98-42fa-acf8-26442ec5da46/content/fig4_3_C.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> Double harelip and complete cleft https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315009414/7d1a5bde-0d98-42fa-acf8-26442ec5da46/content/fig4_4_C.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
