ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present chapter is to investigate the phenomena of accent * as manifested in the elements of a word. We shall find that the degree of emphasis of elements of words tends to bear an inverse ratio to the relative frequency of their occurrence, and that the accentual system of a language exhibits a condition of equilibrium, the maintenance of which is responsible for accentual changes.
