ABSTRACT

The object of the following two experiments is to trace and measure the influence of a ‘directing idea’ in suggestion. The directions here given are intended for a group of subjects, and it must be borne in mind that in all experiments on suggestion it is essential to follow the directions with the most minute care, as the slightest deviation makes a difference in the suggestive effects. The apparatus to be used is shown here, but any other method of displaying lines of varying known length may be employed. It consists of a ruler on the back of which a strip of white paper has been pasted with a black line 1 mm. thick running all the way down the centre. The ruler slides into a slotted wooden case, lined with felt to prevent slipping, and the back of the case is covered with black paper (see p.94). Each subject is provided with a sheet of squared paper. A, the case; B, sliding ruler, graduated in mms. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315009810/61a4cc26-c726-4977-a558-75fbf99de4a5/content/fig8_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
