ABSTRACT

BY personality I mean, simply, what kind of a person is so-and so, what is he like? This is not quite the same as the colloquial usage, whereby personality refers merely to the extent to which a person impresses or attracts other people. Rather it connotes the whole of a person's outstanding characteristics, his emotional and social traits, interests and attitudes, which distinguish him from other personalities. You can call this temperament, or character, or disposition, if you prefer. I shall not attempt a more precise definition, but will discuss the theoretical nature of personality later.
