ABSTRACT

'REPRESENTATIONS' as used here refers wholly to intra-psychic events. In particular, the concept refers to sensations, perceptions, ideas and images. There will be three ways in which these theories link emotion with representations: (1) Emotion consists of representations; (2) emotion arises from representations; (3) representations arise from emotion. Although these theories qualify the concept of representations in terms of phylogeny, or the unconscious, or in terms of significance, these qualifications are incidental to the main hypothesis which holds that emotion can be accounted for through the intra-psychic events of sensations, perceptions, ideas and images.
