ABSTRACT

Attempts to measure the time the earth has existed and to estimate how long it may be expected to endure in approxi mately its present state have led to the use of larger and larger figures. At present the statement of time is no longer expressed in millions but in billions of years. Theories as to the meaning of changes in the earth that have, and are likely to take place, are still unproven. We are not sure that " through the ages an increasing purpose runs The one thing that all scientists accept is that each new condition of the earth inevitably comes as the result of uniform laws acting upon what has existed. With this as a basis it is possible to discover much and infer more regarding the past history of the universe.
