ABSTRACT

Brain Action Without Consciousness.—Not all the happenings in all the neurones are accompanied by mental states. Stimuli are incessantly coming in from the body which need not be felt; e.g., many stimuli from the lungs or digestive tract in waking hours; many stimuli from all quarters during sleep; many stimuli of slight amount. Stimuli are incessantly going out to the muscles which some psychologists think are never felt and which certainly in many cases and at many times are not; e.g., the stimuli which regulate the nourishment of parts of the body and control the reflexes such as winking or the contraction of the pupil of the eye.
