ABSTRACT
THE cornerstone of psychoanalysis was laid when Freud discovered the unconscious meaning of the hysterical symptom. Its foundations have been the analysis of neuroses, dreams, and characterdevelopment, and they bear a superstructure for which they were not originally designed. For the resulting facts and theories describe such fundamental human processes that they have applications, not only in psychiatry and medicine, but in all professions which deal with the effects produced by the human mind. These include those disciplines in which practical assistance· to other human beings is the immediate purpose, such as social work, clinical psychology, criminology, and education, and also those whose purpose is primarily cultural or artistic.
