Introduction

What is the bearing of the theory here outlined upon other and more popular theories of the cause of war? It is, as we have seen, itself a simple theory. But it has important consequences for the other theories of war commonly held to-day. We wish to bring out the implications of what we have said for two of the most prevalent cotemporary theories—the theory that ‘ war is due to capitalism,’ and the theory that ‘ war is due to nationalism.’
