ABSTRACT

It is, however, interesting to consider what may be meant by the dictum of the studios that things should be drawn ‘as they really look’, and concurrently by Mr Clive Bell's contention that representation of any kind is always irrelevant in Art. Representation involves two things, what is represented and a Medium. Let us first consider the general problem of the medium and its use, approaching the question through the three divisions of our list, from each of which we naturally arrive at different conclusions.
