ABSTRACT
Pleasure and unpleasure do not occur by themselves in the mind. They are ways in which other things happen. The pleas ure ensuing upon any stimulus depends far more upon the state o f the organism than upon the nature of the stimulus. To make pleasure the goal of activity is a perversion. Pleasure is a by product of activity. Most uses of pleasure theories in criticism are unnecessarily crude.
