ABSTRACT

A small, landlocked country of 26,300 square kilometres (10,200 square miles) in east central Africa, Rwanda is bordered by Tanzania on the east, Uganda on the north, Zaire on the west and Burundi, the country it is most connected to historically, on the south. Located just south of the Equator, it is one of Africa's most densely populated countries, with a population in 1994 estimated at 8.3 million. The capital is Kigali.
