ABSTRACT
Located on a strip of land 145 kilometres across (90 miles) and less than 600 kilometres long (360 miles) between Benin and Ghana on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, Togo has a total land area of just 56,600 square kilometres (21,900 square miles). Formerly administered by France, Togo became an independent nation in 1960.
