ABSTRACT

Lying across the equator, landlocked Uganda is roughly the size of the United Kingdom, about 236,000 square kilometres (91,100 square miles). Bounded by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south and Zaire to the west, Uganda has a multiethnic population of some 19.1 million (1994 estimate). Kampala is the national capital and the largest city in the country. Though English is the country's official language, Luganda is the most widely spoken language, with Swahili also spoken by many. About two-thirds of the population follow Christianity (almost evenly divided between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism) while 16 per cent follow Islam. The country is presently divided into 39 districts.
