ABSTRACT

Located in south-central Africa, Zambia is a landlocked country surrounded by Tanzania to the north, Malawi to the east, Mozambique to the southeast, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana to the south, Angola to the west and Zaire to the northwest. Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, the country is 752,600 square kilometres (290,600 square miles), about three times the size of the United Kingdom. The population was estimated at 9.1 million people in 1993. Areas of highest population concentration are the copper-mining towns in the northeast, the capital city of Lusaka, and the nine provincial administrative centres.
