ABSTRACT

TI-H~: religious condition of the Chinese mind nlay be illustrated by the mode in which Christianity is received by it.

"Te cannot expect that the religion of "the Bible should be accepted at once with a cordial and unquestioning faith by the people of a conntry like China. It must first be subjected to the criticisms that most readily occur to them. The nature of those criticisms depends on the state of opinion prevailing among such as use them. They have a certain standard by which they form a judgment on moral and religious subjects. The objections they bring against Christianity are, therefore, an index to their state in regard to morality and religion.
