ROME had arrived at that epoch of moral depravity which was called the Empire. By a strange and rare contrast,
never had the separation between good and evil been more complete than in that century of superficial civilization, brilliant, yet corrupt to the core. The Romans worshipped no other god than Augustus; and the emperor had caused the triumvirate to be forgotten.
