IT is nut possible that we should, within the limits of a single chapter, give our readers anything like a complete summary of the doctrines of a religion which now forms the subject of so much elaborate and learned inquiry by so many distinguished and able" scholars. Our attempt will rather be to give here the substance of the" great lessons and ideas which Gautama preached and inculcated to his countrymen.
