ABSTRACT

The Dharma Sûtras of Gautama, Vasishtha, Baudhâ- yana, and Âpastamba furnished us with the best available materials for an account of the manners and laws of the Rationalistic Period. The Dharma Sâstra of Manu supplied us with equally valuable materials for an account Hindu life in the Buddhist Period. Fortunately, the series of Dharma Sâstras was continued in the Puranic times, and Yâjnavalkya gives us a list of no less than twenty works. They are :—

4. Hârîta.

5. Yâjnavalkya.

6. Usanas.

7. Anglras.

8. Yama.

9. Âpastamba.

10. Samvarta.

11. Kâtyâyana.

12. Brihaspati.

17. Daksha.

18. Gautama.

19. Sâtâtapa.
