ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with possible improvements in Indian agriculture — improvements necessary in order to support the increasing -population. Agriculture is carried on in the different Provinces with an Various infinite variety of detail. The name of rice has from time immemorial been closely associated with Indian agriculture. The efforts of Government to improve the native methods Model of agriculture, by the establishment of model farms under farms skilled European supervision, have not been generally successful. A School of Agriculture has been established at Saidapet, in connection with the model farm, with subordinate branches in the Districts, so as to diffuse as widely as possible the agricultural lessons that have been already learned. The Department of Agriculture, as re-established under Lord Ripon's Government, has endeavoured to remedy these omissions, particularly in regard to the diffusion of veterinary knowledge.
