First Period.

We have to distinguish four Vedas—the Rig-Veda, the Sama-Veda, the Yajur-Veda, which is in a double form, and the Atharva-Veda. Each of these is again subdivided into three distinct parts—Saṃhitá, Bráhmana, and Sútra.
