ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the final years of the twentieth century and attempts to analyse the political, social and economic developments of modern British society. The period is one dominated by the Thatcher era, as even the last decade, when she was no longer Prime Minister, saw Britain coping with her legacy. Mrs Thatcher once claimed that she wanted to change everything about Britain, and it is certainly true that her unmatched period of premiership was the most influential since that of Attlee. Whether or not she created a new political consensus to replace the previous one, is a matter of ongoing public and academic debate. Certainly, the Britain of 2000 was a very different place, to that of only 20 years earlier.
