ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the difficulties one may encounter in sharing the miscarriage with their partner, family and friends, and the alternative sources of support available. The comments, attitudes and actions of those around people are very powerful in confirming or legitimating their experience, in helping or in hindering them. The Miscarriage Association is a voluntary organisation with support groups and telephone contacts, run by women who have experienced a miscarriage themselves. The National Childbirth Trust also has some support groups. The Miscarriage Association publishes a regular newsletter and information leaflets. It often does not matter what professional background the person is from, it is the quality of their understanding and the time they can give them that are important. Hilary approached a homeopath, at a friend's suggestion, because she could not cope with the milk she was producing after her miscarriage at twenty-two weeks.
