ABSTRACT

Knowing about the loss can be central to our understanding of the process of the miscarriage and help you to make sense of the experience. At the time of the miscarriage there is often talk of tests', and perhaps the advances of high-tech modern medicine in many fields have fuelled these expectations. It seems common that junior hospital doctors, in their anxiety to help, make promises that cannot be fulfilled. There are two tests that are routinely performed in most hospitals: firstly, tissue is examined to confirm the pregnancy; this can seem like a bit of an insult at the time but it is important to confirm that the bleeding is not due to any other cause; secondly, the possibility of a molar pregnancy is excluded. If there is a fetus, it looks to see if there are any obvious abnormalities which should be recorded.
