ABSTRACT

Jane arranged for her baby, who was miscarried at nineteen weeks, to be buried in her local graveyard. Lynda miscarried at twenty-five weeks. A legal definition has implications for registration and disposal and some women feel very strongly about the lack of legal status of the fetus or baby and significance of the event. The emotional reality of a child for her matched the physical presence of a living baby. It might well have been different for her if she did not already have children or if she had not been successful in having a third child. All pregnancy loss is part of the same continuum, of experience. A few hospitals organise a memorial service in the hospital chapel each week or month, at a set time. All parents who have suffered a miscarriage are welcome to attend.
