ABSTRACT

The introduction to Chapter 10 outlined details of the legislation for equal opportunities which has impacted directly on school policies and practice and which was enacted as a result of public and political pressure. This legislation laid the legal foundations for equality in society, and, as one refraction of this, in schools in the UK. The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) was cited in relation to this, this legislation following that of two decades earlier which was directed to other issues of inclusivity in society: issues of sex equality, (the Sex Discrimination Act 1975), and ethnic equality, (the Race Relations Act 1976).
