ABSTRACT

Ilse Schwidetzky (1907–99) was a professor at the University of Mainz in former West Germany. She published prolifically on many topics of physical anthropology, especially the biology of skeletal populations and the classification and evolution of ‘races’, but came to international attention as recipient of the Broca Medal and as a senior office-holder of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences from 1978 to 1988.
