ABSTRACT

The jobs of aircrew - of captains in particular - are manifestly the most stressful. They are central to the task of the airline; they carry the immediate risk of flying and immediate responsibility for passengers" safety. It is important therefore to consider by what mechanisms - some deliberately created, others not so and perhaps less obvious - their anxieties are dealt with, how effective these mechanisms are, and to what extent the stress is contained within the flying system or spills over into other parts of the organization.
