ABSTRACT

Examination of the existing system of automatic weaving had shown that all tasks in the shed were interdependent, but that many of the individual workers were independent. They were linked only through the Shift Supervisor. Even those with interdependent relationships had varying degrees of interdependence on overlapping numbers of looms. The shed was too big and there were too many workers to permit stable, cohesive relationships between the members of shift aggregates. The confusion of task relationships precluded the formation of small, structured, and internally led work-groups consistent with the interdependence of tasks.
