ABSTRACT

During my first visit to the Calico Mills there were some preliminary discussions about management problems, but no changes were made. The period between my first and second visits was used by the Managing Agent and other managers to accustom themselves to the idea that reorganization had become necessary. A Board decision to expand chemical operations by building a new factory in Bombay lent force to the idea, and the course of events in the automatic shed encouraged the belief that reorganization need not be a catastrophic experience. Between my visits the Managing Agent also made one of his periodic trips to Europe. He and I met in London, and management organization was among the many topics we discussed. In these discussions, held a long way from Ahmedabad, it was easier to go further with general appreciation and analysis than would have been possible amid the worry and urgency of immediate day-to-day management affairs.
