The difficulty of differentiating between training and therapy led us, in our early conference, to insist that:

'Study Groups should be conducted only by those who have themselves had experience of psycho-analysis .... Experience shows that it takes clinical experience and clinical sensitivity to conduct a group in such a way that it steers clear of becoming member- rather than groupcentred'

(Trist and Sofer, 1959).
